Hunger Banquet March 13th 2010 12:00 pm — 3 pm
When hunger gets in nothing else can. — Proverb
Ascension Church recognizes that hunger exists globally
and in our community and is committed to living the words of the Gospel
"Whatsoever you do to the least of my brothers, that you do unto me."
That's why we are joining with Oxfam America to combat hunger.
1.2 billion people live in poverty.
842 million of these people suffer from chronic hunger.
Every 9 seconds, a child dies from hunger and other
preventable diseases. That’s 30,000 children a day.
At our hunger banquet we will eat as the world eats: a few of us will
eat well, many will experience what it is to have barely adequate food
resources, and some will live the reality that too many do —
that there is often barely enough food to survive.
We will gather donations of canned good, raise funds,
and raise awareness of the reality of hunger in our community. The event
will benefit Oxfam America's global efforst to fight hunger and the Emergency
Food Program at Montgomery County's own Community Action Development
Commission (CADCOM).
The roots of hunger lie in inequalities in
access to education and resources. The results are a cycle of illiteracy,
poverty, conflict and the inability of families to grow or buy food.
